The Hanging Girl

Swedish police are the local law-enforcement presence in the Swedish strand of the investigation, providing practical coordination as Carl Mørck and Assad pursue events connected with the Nature Absorption Academy Headquarters on Öland. Their role is shown through specific checks, communications, and investigative leads rather than through a broad account of the agency’s structure.

Cross-Border Coordination

Before Carl and Assad’s work in Sweden proceeds, the Swedish police have already been informed of their business there. The arrangements are described as being in order, establishing cooperation across the national boundary while the investigators pursue their case. The mood remains subdued: heavy cloud hangs over the journey, and the two detectives say little to one another.

Verification and Response

As Carl gives Swedish officers his account of events, colleagues routinely check his and Assad’s identities by telephone. The procedure is presented as ordinary verification during a serious and unsettled situation. In a separate update, an officer points to information on a computer screen and tells Carl that a woman has confessed to attacking him and Assad. The officers thus connect the investigators’ account with information already recorded in the case.

Pursuit of Atu Abanshamash Dumuzi

After the attack information emerges, a Swedish plainclothes officer says that police will issue an alert for Atu Abanshamash Dumuzi and his car. The response widens the investigation from the reported attack to locating a person whose movements matter to the inquiry.

A later communication adds a significant complication. A Swedish investigator tells Carl that a replay of the emergency dispatch recording indicates that the caller who summoned police and an ambulance to the Academy was Atu. The investigators also have reason to believe that Atu was the person who freed Carl and Assad. The information is passed to Carl before Atu’s arrest, changing the picture of Atu from a straightforward subject of pursuit to someone suspected of both involvement in the Academy events and assistance to the detectives.

Narrative Function

The Swedish police’s actions frame the Swedish investigation as coordinated but dependent on verification: identities are checked, a confession is reported, and an alert is planned, while the dispatch recording supplies a lead that complicates the emerging account. Their role is especially consequential because the same inquiry links an attack on Carl and Assad with a possible rescue by Atu. The agency’s contributions help move the investigation forward without resolving every uncertainty about his actions.
